I mentor startups on a regular basis, and love it. This allows me to work with companies that are anywhere from seed stage to multi million dollars. One commonality that seems to be in place across all size businesses, the want to optimize.
We all want to optimize, but there is a big difference between optimizing when there is scale and when there is not. It’s ok to focus on optimizing your shipping rates, merchant accounts, packaging, anything… but not until you have the scale to matter.
It’s ok to pay a little too much (ie: get screwed) when you don’t have volume, when you have the volume, negotiate (if it’s in line with your strategy) and you have the team with the time or ability.
